A GPS tracker- teaching kids about thankfulness

27/5/2015

It would be wonderful if these simple steps would encourage children to look for opportunities to thank and encourage those who regularly help us and minister to others at work, home and at church. It might serve as a reminder to all of us to take a moment to encourage and thank others.
2. Encourage those children who do say 'thank you'. This is something that happens easily while children are young. 'What lovely manners!" "I heard Susie and Jason saying 'thank you'. Nice to hear!"

Consciously, watch for older kids, too, who say 'thank you' and comment approvingly of this behaviour.

3. Regularly encourage kids to look for those who serve others, and to thank them.  It's wonderful to set aside a special day of thankfulness and thanksgiving. It's really helpful to present a lesson on gratitude and thanksgiving. But don't leave it until those occasions to encourage kids to regularly look for others who, quietly and without fuss, are helping us.

We have a kookaburra that visits us each day expecting to be fed. He perches high in the gum tree and waits. If I step outside, he sails down and lands with a thud in front of my feet. It's quite disconcerting! He doesn't make a sound. He just waits.

But a family of magpies also lives nearby and they, too, drop in occasionally. Magpies frighten many people. They do look quite fierce and they certainly snap up any snack offered to them. But there is something endearing about magpies that set them apart from kookaburras. They stay and say, 'thanks'.
It reminds me of Judith Wright's poem, Magpies:
'......Their greed is brief; their joy is long.
For each is born with such a throat
as thanks his God with every note.'

How do you teach such joyful gratitude to children?
Here are 3 simple ways to encourage thankfulness both in your own children and the children within your children's ministry at church.
1. Thank others yourself. Children might not listen or obey but... they excel at copying behaviour.
As a toddler, my granddaughter developed a troubling cough. Her parents were very concerned until they realised that her cough was a duplicate of her mother's morning sinus cough. She copied her mother.

If you want children to be thankful, you must show thankfulness yourself. At home, and in your kidmin program, thank children for their help and involvement.
Make a point of thanking volunteers. Watch for opportunities to do so. Don't wait until the end of the term or the year. Involve the kids, too. For example, We have someone with us today who always stays behind to wipe down our tables. Do you know who does that for us? Let's bring him/her up the front and say thank you.
The FREE printable, a Thankfulness GPS found at the end of this article, can be downloaded and used to help kids search for and locate those who minister to others at church. it is best if you could print the two sheets/child onto heavier paper or light-weight card. Use it anytime. It doesn't have to  be a special occasion. The idea is simple- the children are asked to locate various people from church who help us. The tasks are often out of the spotlight. The people involved might easily be overlooked by the kids. But they are people who are using their gifts and talents for others and the church would be the poorer without them.

The children need to find each person and have them sign their name on their sheet. They must also thank them and give them a 'Thank You' card. You'll find these cards on the second sheet of the printable. You might like to award a prize to any child who can find all those listed on the sheet and complete the entire activity.

I can't believe there's a National Chocolate Chip Day... really? Amazing! (I'm sure there's not a Brussells Sprout Day.) Anyway, what a great excuse to eat a pile of chocolate chip biscuits. And... it's today! (I hope you didn't miss the memo..)

Now, admittedly, not all of these nationally and internationally recognised days in May have too much of note for children's ministry. But, they can add a bit of fun and perhaps added significance to your day and your kidmin focus. It might also provide some additional comment and reach to your children's ministry social media pages. You might generate some fun comments and interaction and, your page LIKES might increase.

So... let's take a look at what's happening this month, other than Chocolate Chips. If you're using the special Ministry Planner Kit, you might like to add these dates to the month planner and the information to your notes as a reminder.

MAY 15:  NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP DAY

Ideas?? Cook a batch of chocolate chip muffins and drop them off at your local school or childcare centre with a small note of thanks for their work with kids. It's really helpful to encourage a strong connection between your work with children and families and the local schools. (Take a couple of photos of the teachers and upload them to your kidmin Facebook page.)

MAY 11-15: NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK WEEK
What a fun theme and a good reminder about physical fitness. It's so easy to forget about fitness when you're busy. Although I've read many reminders about standing up and moving after you've focused on your computer work for any length of time, I regularly forget.. You might be interested in this short list of helpful apps HERE that will remind you to stand up and move, and even to blink.
It might be a good idea to mention this special week focus on your social media and perhaps share this verse from What's in the Bible, too.

MAY 15: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES
May 15 is certainly a popular date. Perhaps you could remind families about some of the great resources available:

FREE resources from Thriving Family magazine.. HERE
Odyssey Club for kids, where kids will learn how to deepen their relationship with Jesus and live it out ...HERE
LeadershipforKids.tv: 'This free, kid-friendly video site teaches your children biblical principles like courage, confidence and kindness.' HERE

MAY 11-17: NATIONAL VOLUNTEERING WEEK
Those who minister in children's ministries have no need to be reminded of the importance of volunteers. Post some inspirational quotes online and take this opportunity to give a small gift to your volunteer team. You can find both in this recent article, 3 Tips for thanking volunteers the easy way,HERE.

MAY 18: INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY
Many museums plan activities and events for this International Museum Day. It might be helpful for your church and community if you list some of the activities available in your area. But this is also a great opportunity to highlight the Creation Museum, and its  state-of-the-art displays that bring the pages of the Bible to life. You can take a virtual tour of this museum in high resolutionHERE.

MAY 23: WORLD TURTLE DAY
Highlight Turtle Day with some cute images.
Picture
MAY 24: PENTECOST SUNDAY
If you're looking for resources for your kidmin for this special date on the calendar, you might be interested in the mini clip from What's in the Bible, available from Worship House Media.HERE

MAY 25: MEMORIAL DAY
There are plenty of quality movie clips to highlight Memorial Day on the SkitGuys site HERE. They aren't particularly for children's ministries, but still useful if you're looking for something special for Memorial Day. Our Heroes, though, is a clip that shows a boy learning about the cost of freedom with his father and is worth checking out. See HERE

MAY 25: INTERNATIONAL MISSING CHILDREN DAY
This is a day where people around the world commemorate the missing children who have found their way home, remember those who have been victims of crime, and continue efforts to find those who are still missing. The symbol for International Missing Children's Day is the forget-me-not flower.

Use this day to encourage everyone to think about children who remain missing, pray for the children and their grieving families and to spread a message of hope.
More information can be foundHERE

Well.... there's certainly plenty in the month of May to keep you busy. There are also plenty of opportunities for you to connect with your church families and those within your community to encourage, inspire and share. Enjoy the month of May!

3 tips for thanking your volunteers the easy way

If you take a few moments to google quotes about volunteers, you'll find dozens. I've included some below that you might like to use for your social media pages. They all highlight the importance of volunteers, something that you and your kidmin know without Google.
But... how do you thank and encourage these wonderful volunteers for their faithful service and commitment to this work with children and families? I've outlined 3 simple yet important tips to inspire your volunteers. But I've used a new program,Emaze, to present this information. You can click on the presentation below or on the link to view it in your browser.

If you don't have Powerpoint available to use or would like your presentation to be a little more animated, this online presentation program may be an option for you. There is a free version, but obviously, it's worth paying a bit more for the extras: download your presentation in different formats, export as a video file, add your own logo. The basic paid version costs $4.89 per month, with more for team level.

It's quite simple- just choose a template and get started. Add images and content- include charts, media- add a 3D effect... and more.
You can view my presentation below or click on the link here to view in your browser. Pause the presentation if you need more time to read or progress further or backwards with the arrows.
Powered by emaze
The presentation also includes simple instructions for creating a small gift box with downloadable labels as a 'thank you' for your volunteers.
The file for these labels can be found below.
Use the same gift box idea with a different label to make a simple Mother's Day gift.
You'll find labels for Mother's Day below, too.

5 simple steps to a beautiful Mother's Day gift

No matter how much time I allow for Mother's Day preparations, I still seem to be rushing to complete last minute details. Are you the same?

Maybe it's because Mother's Day requires ideas for our kidmin/church focus on Mother's Day as well as planning for my own family. It probably also means thinking of friends or others in my street who may be alone on Mother's Day and asking them along to our church family breakfast. (Our Mother's Day breakfast includes everyone so it's a great opportunity to build community.)

Anyway, if you're like me, you might still appreciate a simple gift idea for Mother's Day, whether it's for the kids to make or for you and your team to make and give to mothers/women on Mother's Day. (Maybe you're using this special event as an opportunity to thank those on your team and need a nice little gift that's easy to create. In which case, use alternate colours and omit the Mother's Day tag.)
This lovely little cupcake with gift tag takes very little time to create.
Needed supplies:
* cupcake (You can make your own or buy them ready-made if you're really short of time. You could also use muffins for a larger gift.)
* gelati cups
* prepared fondant
* round cookie cutter or even an egg ring would work
*almond slivers, berries
*clear cellophane bags  20x28cm
*ribbon
Gift tags - see below        (Optional: jam)
Step 1.
Roll out a small amount of prepared icing fondant. Cut a circle using your cutter or egg ring. Place on the top of your cupcake. (Smearing some jam on the cupcake will help it stick.)
Step 2.
Using 5 or 6 almond slivers, create a small flower in the centre of our fondant circle. Add a berry as the centre of your flower. (Again, a bit of jam might be helpful if it's not sticking well to the fondant.) This idea of an almond and berry daisy  is fromLisa Hubbard's photography
Step 3.
Pop the decorated cupcake in a gelati cup. (It protects the decorated cupcake a bit.) Slip the gelati cup with cupcake inside a cellophane bag.
Step 4.
Cut 25-30cm piece of ribbon and secure the top of the cellophane bag with a bow.
Step 5.
Download and cut out the Mother's Day gift tags and attach to the cellophane pack.
Even kids can make these special gifts and I'm sure all the mothers will really appreciate them.

A new way to think about kidmin conferences

5/5/2015

Picture
Over 6,600 passionate kidmin leaders and volunteers recently attended the Orange conference in Atlanta, Georgia. I so wanted to join their ranks. Did you, too? But there may be others who just can't justify the outlay of time and it's hard, too, when every cent of your ministry and personal budget is stretched to the limit.

There may be others, like me, who live on another continent. Attending such conferences is beyond consideration. Still, as others have noted, we can read. We can buy books and materials to inform and inspire.

So.... are we really missing out? What value do conferences such as Orange's, 'It's just a phase,' hold for us and particularly for those who can't attend?

Well, let's take a look.......
Who was there?
First, there were a lot of great speakers and presenters: Kristen Ivy, Kara Powell, Trip & Tyler, Ryan Leak, Virginia Ward, Sam Collier, Sofia Dickens, Perry Noble, Caz McCaslin, Adam Duckworth, Jim Burns, Doug Fields, Jud Wilhite and more. Each of these educators, authors, counselors or entertainers recognise the importance of each life stage. And more, they realised what it means to create influence in every phase.
Was the content relevant?
They are on the same page as each one of us who seeks to develop their ability to reach and connect with kids and families. Their aim for the conference was to help you clarify, adjust and refocus. That is, clarify your message; make critical ministry adjustments; refocus on the task of building your team; connecting with parents and helping kids from getting stuck in whatever phase of life they're in.
Perhaps one of the most inspiring aspects of such conferences is the celebration with others. They provide opportunities to share in the ways that God is using us to impact the lives of kids and families for Him.

If you can't attend the conference live, well yes, it's a little disappointing. Fortunately, many conferences now provide Live Streaming. Yes... you'll have to watch any time differences and maybe watch in the early hours of the morning. But.. it's worth it! And.. you can get so much more from these conferences by following the social media posted throughout.
Here's a brief overview of the Orange conference...
I've also created a short slideshow of just some of the great takeaways from the conference.
You'll find much more on the Orange Facebook page.
And, in case that's not enough, The Sketch Effect created a visual of each presenter's message. You can find a couple of samples below, but more can be found on the Orange Facebook page.
Finally, Orange group has prepared a run-down of suggestions following the conference. Don't just absorb the ideas, information, atmosphere and inspiration from the time at the conference and forget about it. Act on some the ideas you can find here....

So.... what was the best part of the conference from your perspective? What really resonated with you?
